What is Death Gratuity?
Death gratuity is a one-time payment given to the family or nominee of a Punjab Government employee who passes away while still working. It’s a way to provide financial support, based on the employee’s salary and how long they served. Here’s what goes into it:
- Basic Pay: The employee’s regular monthly salary, not counting extra allowances.
- Years of Service: How many years and months the employee worked, counted in six-month chunks.
- Dearness Allowance (DA): An extra amount added to the salary to keep up with rising prices, which changes over time.
- Interim Relief (IR): For employees under the 2006 Pay Scale, an additional 5% of Basic Pay is included if they passed away on or after January 1, 2017.
The calculator adds these up to find the gratuity, which can’t be more than ₹20,00,000.
How to Use the Death Gratuity Calculator
The calculator is super easy to use, like filling out a quick form. Here’s what to do:
- Enter the Basic Pay: Type the employee’s monthly basic salary in rupees (for example, ₹13,890).
- Pick the Pay Scale: Choose “2006 Pay Scale” or “2016 Pay Scale,” depending on the employee’s salary structure.
- Add the Date of Joining: Enter the date the employee began working (like January 1, 1998).
- Add the Date of Death: Enter the date the employee passed away (like May 3, 2017).
- Click Calculate: Press the “Calculate Gratuity” button, and you’ll see the results right away.
The calculator automatically finds the right DA rate based on the Date of Death and Pay Scale, so you don’t need to search for that. It also makes sure the dates are correct (the Date of Death must be after the Date of Joining).

How the Calculator Works It Out
Here’s how the calculator figures out the gratuity in simple steps:
- Counts the Service Time:
- It looks at how long the employee worked, from their start date to the date they passed away.
- This time is broken into years, months, and days, then turned into six-month periods (called half-yearly units).
- If there are more than 3 extra months after the last six-month period, it adds one more unit.
- The most units allowed is 66.
- Adds Interim Relief (if needed):
- For 2006 Pay Scale employees who passed away on or after January 1, 2017, it adds 5% of the Basic Pay as Interim Relief.
- For example, if the Basic Pay is ₹13,890, the Interim Relief is ₹695, so the Adjusted Basic Pay becomes ₹14,585.
- Figures Out Dearness Allowance (DA):
- The calculator gets the DA rate for the Date of Death (like 139% for May 2017 under 2006 Pay Scale).
- It multiplies the Adjusted Basic Pay by the DA rate and rounds down to a whole number.
- For example, ₹14,585 × 139% becomes ₹20,273 (rounded down).
- Puts It All Together:
- It adds the Adjusted Basic Pay and DA to get the Total Pay (like ₹14,585 + ₹20,273 = ₹34,858).
- Calculates the Gratuity:
- The formula is: Total Pay × Half-Yearly Units ÷ 2.
- The result is rounded down to a whole number.
- The final amount can’t be more than ₹20,00,000.
- Shows You the Answer:
- The calculator lists the Pay Scale, years of service, half-yearly units, Interim Relief (if any), DA rate, DA amount, and the final gratuity amount.

Example 1: Gratuity for a 2006 Pay Scale Employee
Let’s try the calculator for an employee who passed away in 2017:
- Basic Pay: ₹13,890
- Pay Scale: 2006
- Date of Joining: January 1, 1998
- Date of Death: May 3, 2017
- DA Rate: 139% (for 2006 Pay Scale in May 2017)
How It Works
- Service Time:
- From January 1, 1998, to May 3, 2017 is 19 years, 4 months, and 2 days.
- Total months: (19 × 12) + 4 + (2 days means add 1 month) = 233 months.
- Half-yearly units: 233 ÷ 6 = 38 periods, with 5 months left. Since 5 > 3, add 1 unit, so 39 units.
- Interim Relief:
- Since it’s 2006 Pay Scale and after January 1, 2017, Interim Relief applies.
- Interim Relief: ₹13,890 × 5% = ₹695.
- Adjusted Basic Pay: ₹13,890 + ₹695 = ₹14,585.
- Dearness Allowance:
- DA Rate: 139%.
- DA Amount: ₹14,585 × 139% = ₹20,273 (rounded down).
- Total Pay:
- ₹14,585 + ₹20,273 = ₹34,858.
- Gratuity:
- ₹34,858 × 39 ÷ 2 = ₹679,731 (rounded down).
- Since it’s less than ₹20,00,000, the final amount is ₹679,731.
What You See
- Pay Scale: 2006
- Net Qualifying Service: 19 years, 4 months, 2 days
- No. of Half-Yearly Units: 39
- Interim Relief (5%): ₹695
- DA Rate: 139%
- DA Amount: ₹20,273

Example 2: Gratuity for a 2016 Pay Scale Employee
Now let’s look at an employee under the 2016 Pay Scale:
- Basic Pay: ₹50,000
- Pay Scale: 2016
- Date of Joining: January 15, 2010
- Date of Death: March 31, 2016
- DA Rate: 125% (for 2016 Pay Scale in March 2016)
How It Works
- Service Time:
- From January 15, 2010, to March 31, 2016 is 6 years, 2 months, and 16 days.
- Total months: (6 × 12) + 2 + (16 days means add 1 month) = 75 months.
- Half-yearly units: 75 ÷ 6 = 12 periods, with 3 months left. Since 3 ≤ 3, no extra unit, so 12 units.
- Interim Relief:
- 2016 Pay Scale means no Interim Relief.
- Adjusted Basic Pay: ₹50,000.
- Dearness Allowance:
- DA Rate: 125%.
- DA Amount: ₹50,000 × 125% = ₹62,500 (rounded down).
- Total Pay:
- ₹50,000 + ₹62,500 = ₹1,12,500.
- Gratuity:
- ₹1,12,500 × 12 ÷ 2 = ₹6,75,000 (rounded down).
- Since it’s less than ₹20,00,000, the final amount is ₹6,75,000.
What You See
- Pay Scale: 2016
- Net Qualifying Service: 6 years, 2 months, 16 days
- No. of Half-Yearly Units: 12
