Dearness Allowance (DA) Rates – Punjab Government Employees
This page provides the official Dearness Allowance (DA) rates for Punjab Government employees under both the 2006 Pay Scale and 2016 Pay Scale. These rates are updated as per government notifications and are crucial for salary, pension, and gratuity calculations.
What is Dearness Allowance?
Dearness Allowance (DA), known in Punjabi as ਮਹਿੰਗਾਈ ਭੱਤਾ, is a cost-of-living adjustment paid to government employees and pensioners. It is calculated as a percentage of basic pay and is revised periodically to offset inflation.
Why Are There Two Different Pay Scales?
The Punjab Government revised pay structures in 2016. Employees retired or drawing salary before the implementation remain under the 2006 Pay Scale, while those who adopted the revised structure fall under the 2016 Pay Scale. DA rates differ for both scales.
How is DA Calculated?
DA = (Basic Pay + IR, if applicable) × (DA Rate %) ÷ 100
Example: If Basic Pay is ₹25,000 and DA rate is 38%, the DA amount is:
DA = 25,000 × 38 ÷ 100 = ₹9,500

📈 DA’s Role in Retirement & Arrears Calculations
Even after the implementation of the 2016 Pay Scale, DA for the 2006 scale remains important — especially for:
- 🧮 Leave Encashment Arrears
- 💰 Gratuity Calculations
- 👵 Pension Arrears
- 🔁 Interim Relief (IR) Adjustments
📝 Important: As per Punjab Civil Services Rules, employees under the 2006 scale who retired on or after 01-Jan-2017 are also eligible for an Interim Relief (IR) of 5% on basic pay. In such cases, DA is calculated after adding IR, increasing the overall benefits for the retiree.
